Before becoming part of Vista Care’s Shared Living Services, Josh and Pal both lived in group home settings. Their move to Shared Living marked a new chapter in their lives, where they found the independence and structure they needed to flourish. For the past few months they've been with Vista Care, where they've embraced the opportunity to explore new experiences and develop a strong sense of purpose.
Josh and Pal have many things in common, one being that they love to stay up late. However, their Shared Living provider, JC, realized that their late-night hours could be put to better use. Both Josh and Pal had always been interested in law enforcement, loved feeling in charge, and were eager to contribute to their community. With this in mind, JC came up with the idea of turning their late-night hours into an opportunity to serve as security guards.
Josh and Pal embraced the idea with enthusiasm, and their security journey began. They now patrol various businesses around the community a few nights each week, ensuring that everything is safe and secure. Their jeep is easily identifiable with signs and blinking white and orange lights, clearly marking their presence. Sometimes, they simply drive through parking lots, shining their spotlights and flashlights, while at other times, they get out of the jeep and walk around the properties to make sure everything is in order.
Josh and Pal are loving their new roles as security officers. For them, it’s not just about keeping an eye on businesses; it’s about feeling important and valued in their community. “I like everything. I like shining my spotlight in the dark,” Josh says, while Pal adds, “I love my job. We need sirens!” Their enthusiasm is evident, and they take great pride in wearing their security uniforms.
One of their favorite parts of the job is staying up late and riding around in the jeep. The two of them enjoy drinking Diet Coke and chatting on their walkie-talkies while they work together. Walking around the parking lots, shining flashlights into the darkness, is an activity they find both fun and rewarding. Their teamwork and friendship shine through, and their sense of camaraderie adds an extra layer of joy to the job.
JC speaks highly of the support Vista Care has provided: “Vista Care has been great to work with. We appreciate all of the support we receive. Everything is very well organized, and the communication is great.” JC also acknowledges the freedom Vista Care has given them to find opportunities that align with Josh and Pal’s interests. The community has also been highly receptive, with businesses expressing excitement about having Josh and Pal as security officers. Many of the local businesses are not only happy to support them but also appreciate the added security that Josh and Pal provide.
